Vista Powers Windows 7

January 3, 2009

Start_MenuI’m guessing that a lot of novice Windows Vista users don’t shut down their computers properly because of the default sleep function assigned to what looks like a shut down button accessed via the start menu. Little they know to follow through to the expanded menu to properly shut down rather than put the machine to sleep. I knew to do this, and it didn’t bother me that much but today got around to switching it to shut down. Here’s how to do it in case you don’t know.

It looks as though Windows 7 will describe the feature , as well as make it more straight forward for users to change via the start menu properties. However, I don’t understand why Microsoft don’t  default the button to ‘shut down’ as standard.

Ubuntu – My First Linux Install; almost

Linux Ubuntu

Linux Ubuntu

After months of thinking about it, I finally got around to installing Ubuntu, kind of anyway since I’ve been running the live disc to see how it runs. I wanted to install it on an older laptop, but the system requirements are higher than I expected to run Ubuntu 8, leaving my old laptop struggling to even get to the desktop due to its limited memory running just short of the 256mb requirement. For that, I’m gonna look into either running an older Ubuntu or another Linux distro.

Out of curiosity more than anything else, I’ve been playing with the live disc for the last couple of hours on my desktop. Whilst a lot of the applications are limited, compared to their alternatives, there are some useful tools and utilities that come bundled that appealed to me; like partitioning apps, multiple desktop functionality, font creation software and programming utilities. After only a couple of hours, I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface, and whilst I can’t switch from Windows, I can definitely see me using the live disc as a hardware diagnostic tool if for nothing else.
